Après avoir lui-même subi une intervention au cœur et être demeuré quatre jours à l’urgence de l’Hôtel-Dieu, Philippe Lesage décide d’y tourner un film. Non parce qu’il veut montrer ce qu’on voit habituellement dans les médias, ou dans les télé-séries, mais parce qu’il est profondément touché par le dévouement du personnel hospitalier qui «ne semble jamais dormir». Il passera donc plusieurs jours à tourner à l’intérieur des murs de l’Hôtel-Dieu. Cela donne un film contemplatif, tissé de longs plans séquences, qui montre ce qu’on ne voit jamais : la souffrance ordinaire, et le travail humble de ceux et celles qui tentent de la soulager.

After requiring a heart procedure and spending four days in the emergency ward at Hôtel-Dieu hospital, Philippe Lesage decided to make a film there. Not because he wanted to reveal what we usually see in the media or on TV dramas, but because he was deeply touched by the dedication of the hospital employees who “never seem to sleep.” He spent several days filming inside Hôtel-Dieu. The result is a contemplative piece comprised of long takes showing something we never see: ordinary suffering and the work of the people who try to ease it.
